The mat is thoroughly impregnated and coated top and bottom with asphalt, which adds weight to help the shingles lie flat and resist wind uplift and is also their main water-resistant ingredient. IKO can modify this asphalt with certain additives designed to impart specific qualities. Impact resistance is an example.
